In Memoriam

Fr. Seamus Murtagh

Father Seamus Murtagh believed deeply that we are called to serve during our lifetimes, and he had a special love for those without a permanent place to live, about whom he said:

When you’re standing in front of

a homeless person,

you’re standing on holy ground.

The inspiration for Holy Ground’s program grew out of Father Seamus’ unsurpassed compassion for the houseless population, just as the idea for our name grew out of his quote.

Our mission has been blessed beyond measure by Father Seamus’ deep devotion to persons experiencing homelessness. We know that, without his inspiration, his vision, and his determination to do more for those who have no home, our courageous young mothers and their children would not now be standing on holy ground.”

Fr. Art Obin

Fr. Arthur Obin, OMI, was one of Holy Ground’s earliest and strongest supporters. He was instrumental in the creation of our organization, guided and inspired the small group of founding members from day one, and generously provided Holy Ground with our original meeting place.
Fr. Art was crystal clear about his mission in life: he was about the business of God. His mission was to lift up those who are poor, oppressed, without clothing, food or home, and he constantly challenged those around him to do the same. He reminded us to be nonjudgmental, to always remember where our young mothers had come from, and to always envision where they and their children could be, with a little help from us. Our educational and vocational scholarship fund was established in his name. His passion for helping others was his life’s work. We here at Holy Ground pledge to never forget him and to honor his memory by continuing to carry out his commitment and compassion for our mission.
